Quick Facts
Getting There
Scenic World is located at the corner of Violet Street and Cliff Drive in Katoomba, approximately 90 minutes west of Sydney via the Great Western Highway or the M4 Motorway. Ample parking is available at Scenic World and surrounding areas, though arrive early as the venue hosts the entire UTA festival with thousands of participants and spectators. Train services run regularly from Central Station to Katoomba Station, which is a short walk or taxi ride to Scenic World. Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before the 9:30am start time.
Weather & What to Pack
May in the Blue Mountains brings cool autumn conditions with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 10-18°C. Mornings can be crisp, often starting around 6-8°C, so dress children in layers they can remove as they warm up. The high altitude (around 1,000m) means conditions can change quickly—be prepared for possible mist, light rain, or sunshine. The 9:30am start time means temperatures will be moderate but cool. Light, breathable layers are ideal, with a warm jacket for before and after the race. Keep children well-hydrated despite the cooler temperatures, and apply sunscreen as UV levels can still be moderate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age group is the 1km-4-Kids event suitable for?
The event is designed for children of all abilities who can complete a 1km distance. While there's no strict age limit, it's most suitable for primary school-aged children. Parents are welcome to run alongside their children for support and encouragement.
Do I need to register in advance or can we enter on the day?
Pre-registration is recommended as UTA events can sell out. Check the official UTA website for registration opening dates and availability. The event typically opens entries alongside the other UTA distances in September for the following May event.
What should my child wear and bring on the day?
Comfortable running shoes with good grip for trail surfaces are essential. Dress in layers suitable for cool morning temperatures (10-15°C). Unlike the longer UTA distances, children won't need to carry mandatory gear—just comfortable activewear and a drink bottle. Sunscreen is recommended despite the cooler weather.
Where do we collect race numbers and what time should we arrive?
Athlete check-in details will be provided closer to the event via the UTA mobile app and website. Arrive at Scenic World at least 45 minutes before the 9:30am start to allow time for check-in, toilet stops, and getting to the start line. The event hub atmosphere is exciting with multiple races throughout the festival weekend.
Will there be a medal and other inclusions for participants?
All 1km-4-Kids participants receive a finisher medal to celebrate their achievement. While the entry doesn't include an athlete t-shirt like the longer distances, children will be part of the incredible UTA festival atmosphere and become members of the trail running community—an experience that creates lifelong memories.
