About This Event

Wings for Life World Run is a unique global race where runners and wheelchair participants compete to stay ahead of a Virtual Catcher Car. No finish line - you run until you're caught. 100% of entry fees go to spinal cord research.

Course Description

The Sydney Wings for Life World Run takes place at the iconic Royal Randwick Racecourse, featuring a continuously looping circuit that tests your endurance against the relentless Virtual Catcher Car. The 1.1km loop weaves around the Winx Stand and Old Members Stand, covering mixed terrain of concrete pathways and turf sections. The course has been widened to accommodate all participants comfortably, with wheelchair users enjoying a dedicated 100% concrete route along the trackside. You'll run lap after lap through the historic racecourse until the Virtual Catcher Car - starting 30 minutes behind at 14km/h and gradually accelerating - catches you. It's not about how fast you finish, but how far you can push yourself for spinal cord research.

Evenings can be crisp, so wear layers you can shed as you warm up. Humidity is typically moderate (60-70%), and there's a chance of showers. The night start means you'll be running in cooler temperatures - perfect for maintaining your pace. Bring a light jacket for pre-race, stay hydrated throughout, and consider a headlamp if running past dusk.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Virtual Catcher Car work?

The Virtual Catcher Car starts 30 minutes after the race begins (9:30 PM) at 14km/h and gradually increases speed. You track it through the Wings for Life app as you run laps around the 1.1km circuit. When the car catches your GPS location, your race ends and your final distance is recorded.

Do I need to download the app before race day?

Yes, absolutely. Download the Wings for Life World Run app before arriving, complete the pre-race checklist, and ensure your phone is fully charged. The app tracks your distance and shows when the Virtual Catcher Car is approaching. Test it beforehand to avoid technical issues on race night.

Is the event wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the Sydney location is fully accessible for wheelchair participants. A dedicated 100% concrete route runs along the trackside of the course, ensuring smooth surfaces throughout. Wheelchair users compete in the same event with the same Virtual Catcher Car format.

What facilities are available at Royal Randwick Racecourse?

The racecourse provides refreshment stations with water throughout the event, toilets, bag storage, and a gathering area near the Winx Stand. There's plenty of space for warm-up and spectators. All entry fees and donations go directly to spinal cord research.

Can I run as part of a team?

Yes, Wings for Life World Run encourages team participation. You can form teams through the app, run together on the course, and track your combined distances. Teams add a social element while supporting the cause - finding a cure for spinal cord injuries.
