Getting There

Kangaroobie Base Camp is located at 1080 Old Ocean Rd, Princetown, approximately 20 minutes west of the 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road. From Melbourne, it's about a 3.5-hour drive via Geelong and Colac. Parking is available on-site at the private property. Plan to arrive with time to set up camp and familiarise yourself with the base camp facilities. As this is a remote rural location, check the official event page for specific directions and recommended arrival times for Day 1.

Weather & What to Pack

May on Victoria's Great Ocean Road brings cool autumn conditions with average daytime temperatures ranging from 12-16°C, dropping to 6-10°C overnight. Expect possible rain showers, strong coastal winds, and rapidly changing weather typical of this exposed coastline. Runners should prepare for wet, muddy trail conditions and pack layered technical clothing including waterproof jacket, warm base layers, beanie, and gloves. The coastal location can be particularly blustery, so windproof gear is essential. With hot showers and a fire at base camp between legs, you'll have opportunity to dry out and warm up properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in the team entry?

Teams of 4 or more share the 216km distance over 2 days. The entry includes accommodation at Kangaroobie Base Camp for up to 12 people, access to hot showers, and base camp facilities with an open fire. Teams alternate between the three trail loops (6km, 9km, 12km) throughout the weekend.

How does the relay format work?

Teams rotate through three different trail loops over the weekend. Each runner completes a leg, returns to base camp for recovery, then heads out again when it's their turn. With teams of 4+, you'll get rest periods between your runs. The exact rotation schedule will be provided by the organisers closer to the event.

What should I bring for the weekend?

Essential items include trail running shoes with good grip for muddy conditions, headtorch for early/late runs, full wet weather gear, warm layers, camping/sleeping gear, food and hydration supplies, and recovery items. The base camp has facilities, but bring everything you need for self-sufficient trail running and overnight camping.

Is this suitable for ultra running beginners?

While individual legs are moderate distances (6-12km), the multi-day format with varied terrain and potentially challenging weather requires good trail running experience and physical conditioning. Teams should have members comfortable with technical trail running and camping in remote locations.

Can we bring support crew or extra teammates?

The accommodation allows for up to 12 people per team entry, so you can bring additional team members beyond the minimum of 4 runners, which helps spread the 216km load. Check with the organisers regarding support crew and spectator policies for this private property event.
