About This Event

A steep off-road challenge with awesome views including a huge panorama of Lake Hume and glimpses of snow-peaked alpine ranges. Part of the Riverina Trail Running Series.

Course Description

Starting near the summit of Huon Hill in Bandiana, this course delivers a spectacular blend of terrain across 14.8km (long) or 5km (short). Runners tackle sweeping fire trails, flowing singletrack, and scenic river paths with punchy climbs and exhilarating descents throughout. The long course gains approximately 435m of elevation, whilst the short course rises 180m. Expect jaw-dropping panoramic views over Lake Hume and glimpses of snow-capped alpine ranges in the distance. Getting There

Huon Hill is located in Bandiana, approximately 10km east of Wodonga city centre. Follow Old Bandiana Road to reach the summit parking area. Note that parking at the summit is limited, so carpooling is strongly encouraged. Arrive at least 30-45 minutes before your start time to allow for parking, race number collection, and warm-up. Public transport options are limited, so private vehicle is recommended.

Weather & What to Pack

April in regional Victoria typically sees mild autumn conditions with temperatures ranging from 8-20°C. Mornings at Huon Hill can be quite cool, especially near the summit, so start with layers you can remove as you warm up. Expect possible morning fog or mist with generally dry conditions, though occasional rain is possible. Sun protection is still important on clear days. The trail surface may be muddy in sections if there's been recent rain. Pack a warm layer for after the race and bring adequate hydration despite the cooler temperatures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this part of a series?

Yes, this is Round 1 of the Riverina Trail Running Series. You can enter individual races or purchase a series pass with discounts for multiple events. Series entries include bonuses like a custom RTRS towel.

What gear do I need?

Trail running shoes with good grip are essential given the mix of fire trails and singletrack. Bring your own hydration (vest or handheld) as the course may not have aid stations given the shorter distances. Don't forget a keep cup for the post-race coffee!

Are there facilities at the venue?

Coffee and pastries will be available at the start/finish area. Given the remote hilltop location, facilities may be limited, so plan accordingly. Arrive prepared with everything you need for race day.

Can I view the course in advance?

Yes, Strava routes are available for both the long and short courses on the official website. Reviewing these beforehand will help you prepare for the elevation profile and terrain changes.

What if I've never done a trail race before?

The 5km short course is a great introduction to trail running with manageable distance and elevation. Expect uneven surfaces, some technical sections, and beautiful scenery. Take it at your own pace and enjoy the experience.
