About This Event
Belair Marathon - South Australia's premier trail marathon through Belair National Park. Part of Ultra Series Australia. Distances from 5km to 50km ultra on scenic bush trails.
Course Description
The Belair Marathon takes runners through South Australia's oldest national park, established in 1891, on a challenging trail course surrounded by towering trees and historic pavilions. This isn't a course for personal bests—the marathon features close to 1500 metres of elevation gain, while the 50km ultra tackles nearly 1800 metres. The constantly undulating terrain winds through exclusive trails in Belair and Crafers, with steep climbs rewarded by stunning views across the Adelaide Hills. Runners will navigate bush tracks, pass heritage buildings, and experience natural wildlife in one of Australia's most scenic trail environments. Aid stations are strategically placed throughout, including the famous Manna Gum checkpoint on the longer distances. This course is designed for appreciating the natural beauty and embracing the challenge rather than chasing speed.
Quick Facts
Getting There
The race is based at Karka Pavilion, located 3km inside Belair National Park from the main entrance. Marshals will guide vehicles through the park entrance—follow their directions to the designated parking areas near Karka. Car pooling is strongly encouraged due to limited parking. Plan to arrive early, as the 7:00 AM start means you'll need time to park, collect your race number, and warm up. The park entrance is off Main Road in Belair, approximately 13km south of Adelaide CBD.
Weather & What to Pack
March in the Adelaide Hills typically brings mild, pleasant conditions perfect for trail running. Expect average temperatures between 16°C and 24°C, though start times at 7:00 AM can be cooler. The tree cover throughout Belair National Park provides natural shade, but exposed sections can be warm in direct sun. Pack sun protection including sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. The area averages around 22mm of rainfall over 2 days in March, so trails are usually dry but check weather forecasts beforehand. Hydration is crucial—carry water and use the multiple aid stations throughout the course.
Frequently Asked Questions
What mandatory equipment do I need to carry?
All runners must carry a keep-cup or soft flask for aid stations (this is a single-use plastic-free event). For half marathon, marathon, and 50km distances, you must also have the GPX file installed on your watch or phone for navigation. Optional but recommended items include a space blanket, hat or bandana, 500ml water, and compression bandage.
Are there cut-off times?
Yes. The marathon and ultra have an 11-hour overall cut-off (finishing by 6:00 PM). Runners must depart the Manna Gum aid station by 3:00 PM. The cut-off at Karka Pavilion for all distances is 6:00 PM. Make sure you're trained for the challenging terrain to stay within these times.
How many aid stations are there?
Aid stations vary by distance. The 50km ultra has 7 fully-stocked stations, the marathon has 6, the half marathon has 3, and the 10km has 1. All stations provide water, Tailwind, Coke, lollies, crisps, and fresh fruit. Remember to bring your own cup or flask.
Is this course suitable for a first-time marathon?
Not really. With nearly 1500m of elevation gain and constantly steep, undulating trails, this is a challenging technical course best suited to experienced trail runners. If it's your first marathon, consider a flatter road event. However, the 5km and 10km distances are great introductions to trail running.
Can I get a refund if I can't participate?
Refunds, transfers, and rollovers are permitted but subject to terms outlined in the Race Manual. Check the official website for the full policy details. The event is capped at 500 total participants and entries close on 25 February 2026 unless sold out earlier.
