Course Description
Set on the mountainside overlooking Mount Gambier, the Tower Trail Run offers a spectacular journey through the region's dormant volcanic landscape. Each distance follows looping courses that wind around the iconic Centenary Tower, taking runners deep into valleys and up to scenic peaks. The 5km course provides an approachable trail experience with single-track dirt paths and stairs, whilst the 10km extends the adventure between volcanoes and native trees. The Half Marathon comprises two 10.5km laps, and the challenging 56km Ultra Marathon features four 14km laps through this beautiful and rugged terrain. Expect quiet, scenic trails with significant elevation changes that showcase Mount Gambier's unique volcanic geography.
Quick Facts
Getting There
The race starts at Centenary Tower on Mount Gambier's mountainside, overlooking the city centre. Street parking is typically available near the tower precinct. From the city centre, follow signs to Centenary Tower via Blue Lake. Mount Gambier is accessible via the Riddoch Highway from Adelaide (approximately 4.5 hours drive) or the Princes Highway from Melbourne (4 hours). Arrive at least 45 minutes before your wave start time to allow for parking, registration check-in, and warm-up on the trails.
Weather & What to Pack
Mid-June in Mount Gambier brings cool winter conditions with average temperatures ranging from 6-14°C. Mornings can be particularly cold, and the elevated trail sections may experience strong winds. Rain is possible, which can make trail surfaces slippery and technical sections more challenging. Dress in layers with moisture-wicking base layers and a windproof outer shell. Trail shoes with good grip are essential for the volcanic terrain. The tree coverage provides some wind protection, but exposed sections near the tower can be breezy. Pack gloves and a beanie for the start line, and ensure adequate hydration despite cooler temperatures.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the minimum age requirements for each distance?
The 5km has no minimum age (though the terrain is not pram-friendly), the 10km and Half Marathon require participants to be at least 11 years of age, and the 56km Ultra Marathon requires participants to be 18 years or older.
What type of terrain should I expect on the course?
All courses feature single-track dirt trails with stairs, elevation changes, and technical sections. The trails wind through volcanic landscapes with both climbs and descents. The terrain is not suitable for prams or road-only runners. Trail running shoes with good grip are strongly recommended.
How does the lap system work for longer distances?
The Half Marathon consists of 2 laps of a 10.5km course, whilst the 56km Ultra Marathon comprises 4 laps of a 14km course. Aid stations and support will be available at the start/finish area where you complete each lap.
Can I bring friends and family to watch?
Yes, the looping course format means spectators can see runners multiple times at the start/finish area near Centenary Tower. The scenic location also makes it an excellent spot for supporters to wait between laps.
What should I bring on race day?
Essential items include trail running shoes, layered clothing for cool winter conditions, hydration pack or bottles (especially for longer distances), energy gels or snacks, and sunscreen. For the Ultra, consider bringing drop bags with spare nutrition and warm clothing for lap changeovers.
