Course Description
The Barwon Heads Triathlon offers one of Victoria's most scenic courses. Begin with a 400m swim in the calm, protected waters north of the Barwon Heads Bridge, staying close to the shoreline throughout. The 14km bike leg is flat and fast along the famous Cadel Evans 13th Beach Road, with stunning ocean views the entire way. Finish with a 4km run on coastal paths through bushland, crossing the Barwon Heads footbridge with beautiful water views. The course is mainly flat with gentle undulations on the run, making it ideal for first-timers whilst still challenging experienced athletes. With total road closures on the bike leg and expert water safety from Ocean Grove SLSC, this is a safe and professionally managed event.
Getting There
The event is located at Lahey Square opposite the Barwon Heads Hotel in Barwon Heads, approximately 100km southwest of Melbourne via Geelong. Parking locations will be provided in your race week email. If driving from Melbourne, allow 1.5-2 hours via the Princes Freeway and Bellarine Highway. Arrive by 6:30 AM for race kit collection and bike check-in, which closes at 8:10 AM. Pre-race briefing is at 7:55 AM.
Weather & What to Pack
Late February in Barwon Heads typically brings warm summer conditions with temperatures ranging from 15-26°C. Expect mild mornings perfect for racing, with increasing warmth throughout the day. The coastal location provides cooling sea breezes but also potential for wind on the bike leg. Sun protection is essential - apply sunscreen before the race and wear a hat post-finish. The water temperature should be comfortable for the 400m swim. Stay well hydrated, particularly if conditions are warm, with water stations available at 1km and 3km on the run course.
