Quick Facts
Getting There
Wilsons Promontory National Park is located approximately 3 hours drive from Melbourne via the South Gippsland Highway. The event village is at the Australian Commando Memorial on Ring Road in Tidal River. Parking is available within the national park (park entry fees apply). Due to the remote location, public transport options are limited - carpooling is recommended. Arrive early on race morning as parking fills quickly, particularly for the 6:00 AM ultra distance starts. Allow extra time for park entry and final race preparations.
Weather & What to Pack
Early May in Wilsons Promontory brings autumn conditions with temperatures typically ranging from 8-18°C. Coastal weather can be unpredictable with possible wind, rain, or sunshine throughout the day. Mornings start cool, particularly for the 6:00 AM ultra starts, so layering is essential. Creek crossings and potential beach sections mean you'll get wet, so pack spare warm clothing for after the race. Sun protection remains important on clear days. Hydration is critical for ultra distances despite cooler temperatures. Check the weather forecast leading up to race day and prepare for variable conditions typical of coastal wilderness environments.
Frequently Asked Questions
What mandatory gear do I need to carry?
Check the official race website for the complete mandatory gear list, which typically includes items like hydration capacity, emergency blanket, whistle, and first aid supplies for ultra distances. Shorter distances have reduced requirements. All gear will be checked at registration.
Are there cut-off times for the ultra distances?
Yes, the 100km and 50km distances have checkpoint cut-off times to ensure runner safety and allow course closure. Specific times are published in the race information pack. Runners who don't meet cut-offs will be withdrawn from the race.
Will there be aid stations on the course?
Aid stations are positioned at regular intervals along all courses, with more frequent stations on the ultra distances. They provide water, electrolytes, and nutrition. However, ultra runners should carry their own supplies between aid stations as distances can be significant.
Do I need a national parks pass?
You'll need to pay the standard Parks Victoria entry fee to access Wilsons Promontory National Park. This is separate from your race entry fee. Consider purchasing an annual parks pass if you plan to visit for pre-race reconnaissance or stay multiple days.
Is there accommodation available nearby?
Tidal River within the park offers camping and limited cabin accommodation, but it books out well in advance for popular events. Nearby towns like Foster, Fish Creek, and Yanakie also have accommodation options approximately 30-60 minutes from the start line. Book early to secure your preferred option.
