About This Event
Red Dirt Backyard Ultra in the remote Pilbara region. Last person standing format in the stunning red outback landscape.
Course Description
The Red Dirt Backyard Ultra follows a 6.71km loop around Bayview Road Caravan Park in Karratha, featuring a unique mix of trail surfaces including gravel, hard-packed sand, and distinctive red Pilbara dirt. While the course is completely flat with no elevation gain, the varied terrain and sometimes uneven surfaces present an increasing challenge as the loops accumulate. Runners must complete each loop within the hour before the next one begins, continuing until only one participant remains - the Last One Standing. The remote Pilbara setting provides a stunning backdrop of red outback landscape, making this one of Australia's most uniquely located backyard ultras.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Bayview Road Caravan Park is located in Karratha in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. If travelling from out of town, Karratha is accessible by air via Karratha Airport or by road along the North West Coastal Highway. The caravan park is easily accessible by car with on-site parking available. Plan to arrive well before the 7:00 AM start to set up your crew area and prepare for the challenge ahead. Supermarkets and sports stores are available in Karratha for last-minute supplies.
Weather & What to Pack
Late June in Karratha brings mild winter conditions with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 18-28°C, significantly cooler than the scorching summer months. Evenings can drop to around 12-15°C, so layers are essential as you'll be running through the night if you progress deep into the event. The Pilbara winter is generally dry with minimal rainfall and low humidity. Prepare for strong sun exposure during daylight hours with sunscreen and a hat. Hydration remains critical despite cooler temperatures, and you'll need lighting equipment and warm clothing for overnight loops.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a backyard ultra format?
A backyard ultra requires runners to complete a 6.71km loop every hour, on the hour, until only one person remains - the Last One Standing (LOS). You can only rest, eat, and recover in the time remaining before the next hourly start. Everyone except the LOS is classified as a DNF (Did Not Finish). There is no time limit - the event continues as long as two or more runners remain.
What should I bring for crew support?
Set up a crew area at headquarters with camping chairs, tables, supplies, and food. The organisers have limited basic equipment available on request. Stock electrolytes, varied foods, lighting for night loops, clothing layers, and any personal gear you'll need. Your crew is essential for quick turnarounds between loops.
Can I practice on the course beforehand?
Yes! Pilbara Trailblazers organises training sessions on the actual RDBU loop where you can practice running loops on the hour to simulate event conditions. This is highly recommended to familiarise yourself with the terrain and timing requirements.
What are the duck prizes?
During the event, ducks are placed along the course as spot prizes. If you find a duck and bring it back to headquarters, you receive a prize from sponsor companies. It's a fun addition to help break up the repetitive nature of loop running.
Is accommodation available in Karratha?
Yes, Karratha has various accommodation options including the race venue at Bayview Road Caravan Park. Contact the organisers for recommendations on accommodation, supermarkets, sports stores, and dining options if you're travelling from out of town.
