Weather & What to Pack
June marks winter in Victoria, with Portland experiencing cool to cold conditions during the solstice period. Expect temperatures ranging from 7-14°C, with morning starts particularly chilly near the coast. The region can experience wind, rain, and occasional sunny breaks. Dress in layers with moisture-wicking base layers, a windproof jacket, and gloves for the start. Trail runners should prepare for potentially muddy conditions on the 25km course. Despite the cold, hydration remains important, especially on the longer distances. Check the forecast in the days leading up to the event.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I walk the distances?
Yes! The 9km and 15km distances have dedicated walking categories with earlier start times (9:30 AM for 9km walkers, 8:30 AM for 15km walkers) to ensure adequate course time. However, courses are not suitable for prams.
How do I get to the Cape Nelson Lighthouse start?
Buses depart Portland Ploughed Field (opposite Portland Hospital) at 8:00 AM for 25km runners and 15km walkers, and 9:00 AM for 15km runners. You must be on time as buses leave sharply. All events finish back at Portland Ploughed Field.
What does my entry fee support?
Portland Runners Club proudly donates $2 from every entry to Beats Cycle for Hope. Your participation supports both this worthy cause and the continuation of these community running events.
Are there age restrictions?
The 1km Kids Dash is free for children. For the Irish Mad Mile, participants under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Other distances are open to all ages and abilities, with both running and walking options available.
What should I bring on race day?
Bring warm layers for the winter conditions, trail shoes for the 25km (road shoes fine for other distances), hydration for longer events, and your race confirmation. Post-race food and music await at the carnival finish line, so bring a change of warm clothes.
