Quick Facts
Getting There
Kurrawa Beach is located in central Southport on the Gold Coast, easily accessible via the Gold Coast Highway. Street parking is available along Kurrawa Esplanade and surrounding streets, though it fills quickly on event days. Public transport users can catch the G:link light rail to Broadbeach South station, then it's a short walk to the venue. Arrive at least 60-90 minutes before your wave time to allow for parking, registration check-in, and warm-up. Carpooling is recommended due to limited parking on busy event weekends.
Weather & What to Pack
June on the Gold Coast brings mild winter conditions, perfect for high-intensity racing. Expect daytime temperatures between 12-21°C with lower humidity than summer months. Mornings can be crisp, so bring layers for pre-race warm-up, but you'll warm up quickly once racing begins. The coastal location means potential for sea breezes, particularly in the afternoon. Sunshine is common, so apply sunscreen even in winter. Rain is possible but less frequent than summer. Wear comfortable athletic gear that allows full range of movement for obstacles. Stay hydrated throughout the event despite cooler temperatures.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I bring on race day?
Bring photo ID for registration check-in, comfortable athletic clothing suitable for climbing and crawling, closed-toe running shoes with good grip, sunscreen, water bottle, and a towel and change of clothes for after the race. Gloves are optional but recommended for obstacle grip.
Can I participate if I've never done obstacle racing before?
Absolutely! YOHKA events cater to all fitness levels. The Sprint and OCR Classic courses are perfect entry points for beginners, whilst the 100m Stampede offers a quick taste of obstacle racing. All obstacles can be attempted at your own pace, and there's no penalty for skipping obstacles you're not comfortable with.
Are there wave start times?
Yes, participants are assigned to waves based on their chosen course and registration time. Specific wave times are communicated closer to the event date. Arrive early to collect your race bib and get familiar with the course layout.
Is there a minimum age requirement?
YOHKA Kids courses are designed for children aged 6-14 years. Adult courses typically require participants to be 15+ years old, though specific age requirements may vary by course. All minors require parental consent and adult supervision.
What happens if I can't complete an obstacle?
YOHKA focuses on participation and personal achievement. If you can't complete an obstacle, you can attempt it again, seek assistance from course marshals, or continue to the next obstacle. The emphasis is on challenging yourself whilst staying safe and having fun in the festival atmosphere.
