About This Event

The Kokoda Challenge is a 96km team trekking event through challenging terrain, honoring the Kokoda Track campaign with teams navigating checkpoints over 39 hours.

Course Description

The Sunshine Coast Kokoda Challenge takes teams through the rugged terrain of Imbil State Forest, starting from the historic country town of Kenilworth. This is a team endurance event designed to honour the 1942 Kokoda Campaign, challenging participants to navigate steep mountain climbs, river crossings, and dense bushland. The course emulates the real Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, testing the four pillars of the Kokoda Spirit: courage, endurance, mateship, and sacrifice. Teams must stay together throughout the journey, traversing checkpoint to checkpoint through scenic yet demanding terrain. Whether tackling 18km, 30km, or the gruelling 48km distance, expect a physically and mentally challenging experience that rewards with stunning forest views and an unmatched sense of achievement.

The event starts in Kenilworth, approximately 40 minutes west of Noosa and 90 minutes north of Brisbane. Take the Bruce Highway north, then follow signs to Kenilworth via Eumundi or Yandina. Parking is available on event day at the start/finish area. Arrive at least 60 minutes before your distance's start time for registration, kit checks, and team briefings. Support crews for 48km teams should plan for checkpoint access times.

Weather & What to Pack

May on the Sunshine Coast brings mild autumn conditions with daytime temperatures ranging from 15-24°C. Morning starts can be cool (10-15°C), warming throughout the day. Rain is possible, so pack waterproof layers and expect muddy trail sections. The forested course provides shade but humidity can still be moderate. Dress in moisture-wicking layers you can adjust, bring a hat and sunscreen, and carry adequate hydration—more than you'd typically need for trail running. Weather in the hinterland can change quickly, so prepare for all conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be in a team or can I participate alone?

The Kokoda Challenge is a team event where you must register as part of a team and stay together throughout. Teams consist of 2-5 members. If you don't have a team, you can register for the team matching service and the organisers will help connect you with other participants.

What are the age requirements for each distance?

The 18km requires participants to be 9 years old (or turning 9 in 2026), the 30km requires age 10+, and the 48km requires age 13+. All minors must have parental consent and be accompanied by adult team members.

Is this a race or a trekking event?

The Kokoda Challenge is a journey, not a race. It's a team endurance event where you trek together at your own pace. The focus is on completing the distance as a team while embodying the Kokoda Spirit values. Time limits are: 9 hours (18km), 12 hours (30km), and 20 hours (48km).

Do we need a support crew?

Support crews are not required for the 18km and 30km distances—checkpoints provide water and basic supplies. For the 48km, there is one support crew checkpoint where your crew can meet you, though it's not mandatory. Teams must be self-sufficient between checkpoints.

Are there fundraising requirements?

Yes, the Kokoda Challenge is a charity event supporting Kokoda Youth Foundation's youth programs. Registration fees cover event costs, while fundraising money goes directly to youth programs. Minimum fundraising amounts apply—check the official website for current requirements for each distance.
