Quick Facts
Getting There
The event starts at Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, approximately 15km northwest of Dunsborough and 265km south of Perth. Take Caves Road from Dunsborough towards the cape. Parking is available at the lighthouse car park, though spaces may be limited on event day. The finish is at Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club in central Dunsborough. Arrive early (at least 60 minutes before start) for registration, gear checks, and team briefing. Car pooling is recommended due to limited parking.
Weather & What to Pack
Early March in Dunsborough brings late summer conditions with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 18-28°C. Ocean water temperatures average 20-22°C. Expect predominantly sunny conditions, though coastal winds can develop, particularly in the afternoon. UV levels are high—apply waterproof sunscreen liberally. The swimrun format means you'll be wet and dry repeatedly, so sun protection and hydration are critical. Pack a warm layer for after the event, as wind chill can be significant when wet. Check marine forecasts before race day for ocean conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do we need any special equipment for swimrun?
Yes. You'll need trail running shoes that you can swim in, a wetsuit (recommended for ocean swimming), a tow float for safety and buoyancy between swims, swim goggles, and hand paddles if desired. Both team members must stay within 10 metres of each other throughout the race.
What level of fitness is required?
This is an advanced endurance event. You should be comfortable swimming 4km in open ocean conditions and running 22.5km on trails and beaches. Strong swimming ability is essential, as you'll be in and out of the water nine times navigating coastal conditions.
Can we recce the course beforehand?
Yes, the course follows public trails and beaches around Cape Naturaliste and Meelup Regional Park. Familiarising yourself with the terrain is recommended, particularly the swim entry and exit points. Check the official website for course maps and details.
Is there a time limit to complete the course?
Check the official website for cut-off times. Given the distance and technical nature of the course, expect to be out for 3-5+ hours depending on your team's fitness and experience level.
What support is provided during the race?
SwimRun events typically provide water safety support, course marshals, and aid stations. However, this is a self-sufficient race—teams must carry their own nutrition and navigate the course together. Confirm specific support details when registering.
