Course Description
The Rottnest Running Festival offers a stunning island experience with the marathon course featuring four challenging laps around Wadjemup. Starting and finishing near the Main Jetty, runners traverse sealed roads with rolling hills and breathtaking coastal views. The half marathon covers two laps of the same scenic route, while the 10km and 5km events offer shorter island tours. Expect spectacular ocean vistas, encounters with friendly quokkas, and varied terrain that tests both endurance and mental strength. The exposed coastal sections can be windy, whilst the inland stretches provide some shelter. All courses showcase Rottnest's natural beauty, from pristine beaches to unique island vegetation, making this one of Western Australia's most picturesque running events.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Rottnest Island is accessible only by ferry from Perth (Barrack Street Jetty) or Fremantle. Book ferry tickets well in advance as the event attracts large crowds. Ferries depart early morning to accommodate marathon start times. No private vehicles allowed on the island - participants walk or cycle to the Main Jetty start area. Plan to arrive the day before for bib collection and pasta night. Accommodation on the island books out quickly, so reserve early or arrange same-day return ferry transport.
Weather & What to Pack
Mid-June on Rottnest Island brings mild winter conditions with daytime temperatures ranging from 13-19°C. Mornings start cool around 10-12°C, perfect for marathon running, but the island's exposed coastal position means wind is common and can be quite strong. Expect possible light rain showers and partly cloudy skies. The UV index remains moderate even in winter, so sun protection is recommended. Dress in layers you can shed as you warm up. The cooler conditions are ideal for distance running, but be prepared for wind chill, especially on exposed coastal sections. Stay hydrated despite the cooler weather.
