The Burleigh Swim Run Challenge takes place on the stunning Burleigh Beach, one of the Gold Coast's most iconic coastal locations. Participants start with an ocean swim in the clear waters off Burleigh Beach, directly in front of the Burleigh Lifeguard Headquarters. The Challenge features a 400m ocean swim followed by a 4km beach run along the firm golden sand, whilst the Taste Tester offers a shorter 200m swim and 2km run option. The Young Guns category provides a safe introduction for children aged 5-12 with a 400m wade in ankle to waist-depth water followed by a 400m beach run. Street parking is available along Goodwin Terrace and surrounding streets, though arrive early on the public holiday as this is a popular beach destination. The venue is directly in front of the Burleigh Surf Lifesaving Club and Lifeguard Headquarters. Public transport options include the 700 and 777 bus routes along the Gold Coast Highway. Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before the 6:45 AM start to collect your race number and warm up.

Weather & What to Pack

Late January in Queensland brings warm summer conditions with average temperatures ranging from 21-29°C. Expect high humidity levels typical of the subtropical Gold Coast climate. The early 6:45 AM start helps participants avoid the peak midday heat. Morning conditions are generally pleasant with ocean water temperatures around 25-26°C. Wear light, breathable clothing and apply waterproof sunscreen before the swim. The sun rises early in summer, so expect full sun exposure during the beach run. Hydration is crucial - drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the event and take advantage of any on-course water stations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear for the swim run?

Wear swim attire that's comfortable for both swimming and running - most participants choose board shorts, running shorts with built-in briefs, or tri-suits. Running shoes are optional for the beach run but recommended for the longer distances. You'll transition directly from swim to run, so keep it simple.

Do I need to be an experienced ocean swimmer?

For The Challenge, you should be comfortable swimming 400m in open water with possible waves and currents. The Taste Tester's 200m swim is more accessible for intermediate swimmers. The Young Guns category features a safe wade in shallow water (ankle to waist depth) perfect for children. Lifeguards will be present for safety.

When does registration open and close?

Online registration opens at 7:00 AM on Saturday, 1 November 2025 and closes at 7:00 PM on Sunday, 18 January 2026. Early registration is recommended as this popular Australia Day event may sell out. Follow @burleighswimrun on Instagram for updates.

Are there age restrictions?

The Young Guns is designed for children aged 5-12 years. The Challenge and Taste Tester are open to participants aged 9 and above. There are age group categories ranging from 12 and under through to 50+ years, ensuring everyone can compete in their division.

Can I enter as a team?

Yes, The Challenge offers a Teams Relay option where one person completes the 400m ocean swim and their partner runs the 4km beach run. Teams can be same gender or mixed gender. The team entry fee is $80 plus processing fee.
