The beach access points are clearly signposted along the esplanade.
Weather & What to Pack
September on the Gold Coast brings pleasant early spring conditions with average temperatures ranging from 14-24°C. Morning starts can be crisp, but conditions warm quickly as the sun rises. Ocean temperatures average around 20°C, comfortable for swimming without a wetsuit for most participants. Expect mild humidity and generally clear skies, though occasional showers are possible. Sun protection is essential - apply waterproof sunscreen before the race. Pack layers for before and after the event, and ensure adequate hydration throughout the alternating swim-run segments.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is swimrun and how does it differ from aquathon?
Swimrun is a unique format where you alternate between running and swimming multiple times throughout the course, without stopping for transitions. You run in your swim gear and swim in your running shoes, keeping all equipment with you. It's done in pairs, and the simplicity of no transitions makes it an accessible adventure format.
Do I need special equipment for swimrun?
Basic requirements include running shoes that can get wet, swimwear or triathlon gear, and goggles. Many participants use pull buoys and hand paddles which can be tethered to your body. Wetsuits are permitted depending on water temperature. The philosophy is to keep it simple - you don't need expensive specialist gear to participate.
Can I participate solo or do I need a partner?
Swimrun events are traditionally completed in teams of two, emphasising the shared journey aspect. You'll need to find a partner before registering. Teams must stay together throughout the course, which adds to the camaraderie and safety of the event.
Which distance should I choose as a first-timer?
The Sprint or Short distances are ideal for beginners with basic swimming and running fitness. These shorter options let you experience the unique format without committing to the longer Enduro distance. Choose based on your current fitness level and comfort in open water.
What are the water conditions like at Miami Beach?
Miami Beach offers relatively protected ocean swimming with creek crossings adding variety to the course. September water temperatures are pleasant, and the multiple swim segments mean you're never in the water for extended periods. Conditions can vary with tides and swell, so open water swimming experience is beneficial.
