Course Description

The race kicks off with a 750‑metre (Sprint) or 400‑metre (Enticer) swim from the Altona Pier, winding around buoys before returning to the transition area beside the Surf Life Saving Club. Cyclists tackle up to three laps of an 18‑km (Sprint) or two‑lap 12‑km (Enticer) circuit along the Esplanade, crossing Kororoit Creek and looping back. Runners finish with a 5‑km (Sprint) or 3‑km (Enticer) loop on the scenic foreshore path, passing Bent Street turn‑around. The course offers flat, fast sections with sea breezes and occasional route tweaks due to local infrastructure projects.

Getting There

The event is held at the Altona Beach Foreshore, right beside the Altona Surf Life Saving Club at the corner of Esplanade and Pier Street. Parking and public transport details are posted on the WSTC website, so check there for the latest information and plan to arrive early to allow time for registration and setup.

Weather & What to Pack

January is summer in Victoria, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 20 °C to 30 °C and plenty of sunshine, though occasional sea breezes can bring a light chill. Wear a breathable tri‑suit or wetsuit if you prefer extra buoyancy, and bring a hat and sunglasses for sun protection. Stay well‑hydrated before, during and after the race, and consider a light, salty electrolyte drink to replace lost minerals.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I register and what are the entry fees?

Registration opens about one hour before the start (06:30 AM) and on‑the‑day entries are accepted. Fees vary by membership status – WSTC members, Triathlon Australia members and non‑members each have different rates (see the event page for exact amounts).

What gear is mandatory on race day?

A swim suit, bike helmet (must be worn at all times on the bike), cycling shoes or regular trainers, and a pair of running shoes are required. You’ll also need to complete the waiver form at registration. No wetsuit is mandatory for the sprint distances, but you may wear one if you prefer.

Are there age limits for the different distances?

Yes. Sprint requires athletes to be 16 years or older, Enticer 12 years+, and Dash 10 years+. Junior age limits apply for each distance; see the event information for exact age categories.

How do I collect my bib and timing chip?

All athletes pick up their bibs and timing chips in the club rooms at the Altona Surf Life Saving Club before the race begins. Pre‑registered athletes collect them on the morning of the event; on‑the‑day entrants can do the same after paying the entry fee.

What should I do if I need to change my bike or equipment on race day?

The transition area is located east of the club rooms. Set up your bike, helmet and shoes before the swim finishes. Once you’re in transition you may not re‑enter the area, so ensure everything is ready beforehand. For any issues, speak to a race official in the transition zone.
