About This Event
World's biggest Backyard Ultra format. 6.71km loop every hour on the hour until one runner remains. Last one standing event with 400 participant capacity. Australian record created on this circuit.
Course Description
Herdy's Frontyard Ultra takes place on a 6.71km loop circuit around the scenic Herdsman Lake in Perth's inner northern suburbs. The course is predominantly flat, following well-maintained paths around the lake's perimeter. As a Backyard Ultra format, runners complete one loop every hour, on the hour, continuing until only one participant remains. The course features a mix of sealed pathways and packed trails, with good visibility throughout. While the terrain itself is relatively easy, the true challenge lies in the relentless hourly repetition and mental fortitude required. The festival atmosphere at the start/finish area creates a unique, supportive environment as runners tackle this ultimate test of endurance.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Herdsman Lake Regional Park is located in Wembley, approximately 7km northwest of Perth CBD. Access via Selby Street or Pearson Street, both off Herdsman Parade. Ample parking is available in designated car parks around the lake. Public transport options include bus routes servicing Glendalough Station (approximately 1.5km walk) or various routes along Glendalough Avenue. Arrive well before the 4:00 PM start to set up your personal aid station and crew area, and complete registration.
Weather & What to Pack
March in Perth brings warm late-summer conditions, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 17°C to 29°C. Expect hot afternoons transitioning to mild evenings and cooler overnight periods as you progress through the laps. The event starts in afternoon heat, so sun protection and hydration are critical for early laps. Minimal rainfall is typical in March (around 10mm average), though occasional showers are possible. Pack layers for temperature changes through the night, and bring a headlamp for after-dark laps around the unlit lake circuit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Backyard Ultra format?
A Backyard Ultra requires runners to complete a 6.71km loop every hour, on the hour. You must finish within the hour, then start the next lap when the bell rings. The race continues until only one runner remains - everyone else is a DNF (Did Not Finish). There is no set finish time or distance.
What mandatory gear do I need to bring?
You must bring: a roll of toilet paper (hand in at check-in), headlamp for night laps, soup bowl/container for hot food from aid station, and a keep cup/flask for drinks. Additionally, bring a tutu to wear on lap 22 if you reach that milestone - it's become an iconic tradition at Herdy's.
Can I have crew support and personal supplies?
Yes, designated areas are available where runners can set up their own tables with personal supplies and crew. A manned aid station provides water, hydration drinks, coke, crisps, lollies, sweet and savoury food, and hot soup throughout the first night. You must bring your own cup or hydration vessel.
Are there any qualification requirements?
No formal qualification is required, but this is an extreme endurance event not to be taken lightly. You should have significant ultra running experience and train appropriately. The event has grown to become the world's biggest Backyard Ultra with up to 400 participants, and only one finisher.
What is the refund and transfer policy?
Refunds are no longer available for Ultra Series Backyard and Frontyard events. Transfers are permitted subject to terms in the Race Manual. A dedicated Herdy's Frontyard Ultra Buy/Swap/Sell Facebook page allows runners to arrange entry transfers if they cannot participate.
