Course Description

Celebrate Australia Day with a FREE community triathlon at the Greg Cruickshank Aquatic Centre in Moranbah. The sprint distance and enticer courses feature a pool swim in the excellent aquatic facility, followed by a bike leg through the mining town's wide streets, finishing with a flat run around the sporting precinct. The course is ideal for all abilities, with team options available for those wanting to share the challenge. Mini kids distances provide a perfect introduction to multisport for young athletes. The flat terrain and supportive community atmosphere make this an accessible event, whilst competitive athletes can chase prize money in each category. The early 6:30am start beats the heat of a Queensland summer morning.

Getting There

The Greg Cruickshank Aquatic Centre is centrally located in Moranbah, approximately 200km southwest of Mackay. If driving from coastal regions, take the Peak Downs Highway. Ample free parking is available at the aquatic centre and surrounding sporting precinct. For those flying in, Moranbah Airport services regular flights from Brisbane and Mackay. Arrive by 6:00am for race registration and transition setup. The venue is well signposted from the town centre.

Weather & What to Pack

Late January in Moranbah typically brings hot, humid conditions with temperatures ranging from 22-33°C. The early 6:30am start helps athletes avoid the peak heat, though humidity will still be high. Expect mostly clear skies with occasional summer thunderstorms possible in the afternoon. The inland location means less coastal breeze than eastern Queensland events. Bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat for post-race, and plan your hydration strategy carefully. Light, breathable clothing is essential, and consider pre-cooling strategies before the start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is registration really free?

Yes! The Moranbah Australia Day Triathlon is completely free to enter as part of the town's Australia Day celebrations. Simply register in advance through the Tri-ActiV8 website.

Can I compete as a team?

Absolutely. The TEAM Triathlon category allows you to split the sprint distance between 2-3 teammates, with each person completing one leg (swim, bike, or run). Perfect for trying multisport with friends.

What equipment do I need?

You'll need swimwear, goggles, a roadworthy bike, helmet (mandatory), running shoes, and race nutrition. The pool swim means no wetsuit required. Transition towel and water bottles are recommended for the Queensland heat.

Are there age restrictions?

The Mini Kids categories cater for young athletes, whilst the other distances are open to all ages. Check the official website for specific age group categories and eligibility for prize money.

What if I've never done a triathlon before?

The Enticer Triathlon is specifically designed for beginners with shorter distances, and the pool swim is less intimidating than open water. The free entry and supportive community atmosphere make this an ideal first triathlon.
