Course Description
The NSW State Championship Sprint Duathlon takes place at Sydney Motorsport Park in Eastern Creek, offering a fast, technical course on quality sealed surfaces. Athletes tackle a 5km opening run on the motorsport park roads, followed by an 18.12km non-drafting bike leg that utilises the venue's wide, smooth circuit roads with flowing corners and elevation changes. The final 2.5km run tests competitors' resolve as they push for the finish. This championship course provides an excellent opportunity to chase qualification times for the Age Group Multisport World Championships whilst racing on a venue known for hosting elite motorsport events. The controlled environment ensures excellent safety and spectator viewing opportunities.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Sydney Motorsport Park is located in Eastern Creek, approximately 40km west of Sydney CBD. Access via the M4 Motorway (take Ferrers Road exit) or M7 Motorway. Ample on-site parking is typically available at the venue. By public transport, catch a train to Rooty Hill or Blacktown stations, then taxi or rideshare to the venue (approximately 10 minutes). Arrive at least 60-90 minutes before your start time to allow for registration, transition setup, and race briefing.
Weather & What to Pack
Late January in Sydney typically brings warm to hot summer conditions. Expect temperatures between 20-30°C, with the evening 7:30pm start helping avoid the day's peak heat. However, humidity can still be high, and afternoon UV levels are intense. The sealed surface at the motorsport park can radiate heat. Wear light, breathable kit with good ventilation. Apply sunscreen well before the race. Hydrate thoroughly in the hours leading up to the event, and take advantage of aid stations on course. A cap or visor can help during the run legs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this race open to all abilities or just elite athletes?
The race is open to competitors aged 14 years and over as of 31 December 2025. Whilst it's a state championship event and serves as a qualification race for the 2026 Age Group Multisport World Championships, athletes of all abilities are welcome to participate and compete for their age group.
What are the drafting rules for this race?
This is a non-drafting race, meaning you must maintain a safe distance behind other cyclists on the bike leg. Aus Triathlon competition rules apply, which typically require staying at least 12 metres behind the cyclist in front unless overtaking.
Do I need to be an Aus Triathlon member to compete?
For a state championship race, Aus Triathlon membership is required. If you've already participated in two club races as a non-member during the membership year (1 July - 30 June), you'll need to join before registering for additional events.
Can I qualify for the World Championships through this race?
Yes, this is an Aus Triathlon Qualification Race for the Age Group Multisport World Championships in Abu Dhabi, UAE in November 2026. Note that participants must be 16 years old as of 31 December 2026 to compete at the World Championships, so 14-15 year olds may qualify but won't be eligible to compete.
What equipment do I need?
You'll need a roadworthy bike and an Australian Standards Approved helmet (check for the sticker). Running shoes for both run legs, and appropriate athletic clothing. Transition setup should include towel, race belt, and any nutrition or hydration you'll need. Ensure your bike is in race-worthy condition before the event.
