Course Description
The VRR Tan Time Trial takes runners around Melbourne's most iconic running circuit - the Tan Track in the Royal Botanic Gardens. This historic 3.85km loop has been the training ground for generations of Victorian runners, offering a challenging undulating course with a mix of gradual climbs and fast descents. The 4km option completes one lap, while the 8km tackles two full circuits. Runners navigate smooth sealed paths beneath magnificent elm trees, with views across the gardens and city skyline. The course is particularly scenic in winter when morning mist hovers over the gardens, though the rolling terrain demands respect regardless of the season.
Quick Facts
Getting There
The Pillars of Wisdom are located on the Tan Track, accessible from Anderson Street near the Swan Street Bridge (Melway 2G A9 / UBD 4 N18). Limited street parking is available on Anderson Street and surrounding areas - arrive early to secure a spot. Alternatively, catch a tram along St Kilda Road and walk through the gardens. Public transport users should allow 15-20 minutes walking time from nearby stops. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the 7:30 AM start to complete your entry form and warm up.
Weather & What to Pack
July is mid-winter in Melbourne, with morning temperatures typically ranging from 6-13°C at the 7:30 AM start time. Expect cool, crisp conditions with a possibility of light rain or morning frost. The gardens can be quite exposed to wind, making it feel colder than the actual temperature. Dress in layers with a light running jacket or long-sleeve top, gloves, and a beanie for the warm-up. The undulating course will warm you up quickly once running. Despite the cold start, winter running along the Tan offers beautiful misty mornings and fewer crowds on the track.
