About This Event

A multisport aquathlon event at the scenic Black Mountain Peninsula. Competitors of all ages can participate in swim and run challenges, with courses ranging from kids events to championship distances. Part of the Swim Run Canberra series.

Course Description

The Canberra Swim Run Series Race 3 doubles as the ACT Aquathlon Championships, set against the stunning backdrop of Black Mountain Peninsula. Competitors tackle open-water swims in Lake Burley Griffin before transitioning to scenic run courses around the peninsula's well-maintained paths. The Long Course features a challenging 1500m swim followed by a 5km run, whilst the Short Course offers a 500m swim and 2.5km run combination. First-timers can test the waters with the Teaser distance—a 100m swim and 1km run. The swim course benefits from calm morning waters, whilst the run leg showcases Black Mountain's natural beauty with a mix of sealed and park pathways. Early morning starts ensure ideal conditions for both swimming and running.

Getting There

Black Mountain Peninsula is located off King Street in Deakin, approximately 5km from Canberra's city centre. Free parking is available at the peninsula car parks—arrive early as spaces fill quickly for popular events. From Civic, take bus route 3 or 4 to Deakin, then walk 800m to the venue. Public transport runs frequently on weekend mornings. Arrive at least 45 minutes before your wave start to allow time for registration, transition setup, and warm-up.

Weather & What to Pack

Mid-February in Canberra typically brings warm late-summer conditions with daytime temperatures ranging from 17-28°C. Early morning race starts mean cooler water temperatures around 18-21°C, ideal for open-water swimming. Expect low humidity and generally clear skies, though occasional morning fog can develop over the lake. Apply waterproof sunscreen before the swim and bring sun protection for the run leg. The 6:00 AM start helps athletes avoid the day's peak heat. Stay well-hydrated in the days leading up to the race, and consider a wetsuit depending on water temperature guidelines from the organisers.
