About This Event
Ultra Series WA event on groomed coastal bushland trail. Relatively flat non-technical course. First race in Ultra Series WA. Historic trail used by Whadjuk peoples for tens of thousands of years.
Course Description
The Yaberoo Trail Twilight Ultra follows the historic Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail through Perth's northern coastal bushland, a path used by the Whadjuk peoples for tens of thousands of years. Starting at 3:00 PM, runners experience the unique twilight atmosphere as they traverse groomed limestone trails between Burns Beach Road and Neerabup. The relatively flat, non-technical course winds through shaded corridors of towering trees and open stretches of pristine bushland, offering a peaceful escape from suburban Perth. With three manned aid stations and a generous 9-hour cut-off (finishing at midnight), the course welcomes runners and walkers of all abilities. The single out-and-back format means consistent trail conditions throughout, making it an ideal introduction to ultra or trail running.
Quick Facts
Getting There
The event village is located at Burns Beach Road and Blue Mountain Drive, Joondalup. Parking is available around Windermere Oval and surrounding verges - do not park along Burns Beach Road itself, as this is prohibited for the event. For spectators accessing the Hester Ave aid station, park at Caltex Neerabup on Wanneroo Road and walk 300m down the access track. Plan to arrive early to secure parking and allow time for race registration. Be respectful of local residents when parking on verges.
Weather & What to Pack
February in Joondalup typically sees warm to hot conditions, with average minimums around 20°C and maximums reaching 31°C. The twilight start at 3:00 PM means you'll run through the hottest part of the afternoon before cooling evening temperatures. Rainfall is minimal at around 13mm for the month. Bring sun protection including a hat and sunscreen for the afternoon heat, but pack a headlamp (mandatory) as you'll be running into darkness. Carry adequate hydration - while aid stations provide water and Tailwind, Perth's dry summer heat demands consistent fluid intake throughout your race.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age do I need to be to enter?
Runners must be at least 18 years old for the 50km ultra distance, 10 years old for the 25km and 15km distances, and 6 years old for the 10km and 5km events. All ages are calculated as of race day.
What mandatory equipment do I need to carry?
For 15km, 25km, and 50km distances: mobile phone with event number saved, headlamp, 500ml of water, and a keep-cup or soft flask. For 5km and 10km: headlamp and keep-cup/soft flask. Hat and sunscreen are recommended in extreme heat.
Is this race suitable for first-time ultra runners?
Yes. The course is on groomed, non-technical trails with relatively flat terrain. The generous 9-hour cut-off, three manned aid stations, and close proximity to the event village make this an excellent introduction to ultra running. Trail experience is beneficial but not essential.
What's provided at aid stations?
The three manned aid stations provide water, Tailwind, coke, lollies, crisps, and fresh fruit. As this is a single-use plastic-free event, you must carry your own collapsible cup or vessel for drinks. Aid stations are located at Hester Ave, Rheinhold Place, and the Start/Finish line.
Can I get a refund or transfer my entry?
Yes, refunds, transfers, and rollovers are permitted but subject to terms outlined in the Race Manual. Check the official website for full details on the refund policy and transfer procedures.
