Course Description
Sydney East represents Australia's original swimrun course, pioneering the sport since 2016. This unique harbour-to-headland adventure combines multiple trail runs and open water swims into one continuous course through Sydney's most iconic waterfront locations. Starting from Rose Bay, participants navigate the spectacular harbour with views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, before pushing towards South Head. The course's defining challenge is the seamless transition between running in swim gear and swimming in shoes—there are no formal transitions or gear changes. Every piece of equipment must be carried from start to finish, making this a true test of versatility and endurance against Sydney's stunning coastal backdrop.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Rose Bay is located approximately 7km east of Sydney CBD. By car, take New South Head Road from the city; street parking is available but can be limited on weekends. Public transport is excellent—catch bus routes 323, 324, or 325 from the city, or ferry services to Rose Bay wharf. Arrive at least 45-60 minutes before your start time to allow for parking, registration check-in, and course briefing.
Weather & What to Pack
Mid-April in Sydney offers ideal conditions for a swimrun event, with autumn temperatures ranging from 15-22°C. Harbour water temperatures typically sit around 20-21°C—comfortable for swimming without a wetsuit, though many participants opt for one. Expect moderate humidity and generally stable conditions, though Sydney's harbour can be breezy. Sun protection is essential with UV levels still moderate. The combination of running and swimming helps regulate body temperature, but bring layers for before and after the event.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is swimrun and how does it differ from a triathlon?
Swimrun is a team-based endurance sport alternating between trail running and open water swimming with no transitions. Unlike triathlon, you run in your swim gear and swim in your running shoes, carrying all equipment throughout the entire course. There's no bike leg, and the format emphasises constant movement and teamwork.
Do I need to compete with a partner?
Swimrun events traditionally require teams of two for safety reasons, particularly during open water sections. Check the official website when entries open in January 2026 to confirm team requirements and whether solo categories are available for this event.
What essential gear do I need for a swimrun?
At minimum: swimrun-specific shoes (or trail shoes that drain well), swim goggles, wetsuit (optional but recommended), and a tow float for safety and visibility. Many competitors also use hand paddles for swimming efficiency and a small waterproof pack for nutrition and safety equipment. All gear must be carried for the entire course.
Is open water swimming experience required?
Yes, strong open water swimming ability is essential. Sydney Harbour conditions can include currents, boat traffic, and variable visibility. You should be comfortable swimming in open water with other participants nearby and be able to navigate without lane markers. Training in harbour conditions before the event is highly recommended.
When do entries open and how do I register?
Entries open in January 2026 through the Swimrun Australia website at swimrun.com.au. Subscribe to their mailing list to receive notification when registration goes live. As this is a popular event on an iconic course, early registration is recommended to secure your spot.
