About This Event

Run the tarmac of Western Sydney International Airport before it opens to the public — a once-in-a-lifetime event on a flat, fast runway in support of the Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation. Distances from 4km to Half Marathon.

Course Description

The Runway Run takes place entirely on the sealed tarmac of Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport — one of Australia's most extraordinary race venues. The course is completely flat with no traffic, offering runners a rare opportunity to stretch out on open runway at full speed. The Half Marathon consists of three laps of the runway circuit, the 14km covers two laps, and the 7km completes a single lap. The 4km sends runners down the runway and back. With no elevation change and a pristine sealed surface, this is one of the fastest courses in Sydney — ideal for personal bests. A Red Bull aerobatics display overhead adds a spectacular backdrop.

Getting There

Western Sydney International Airport is located at Nancy Drive, Luddenham NSW, approximately 50km west of Sydney CBD near Penrith. The area is primarily car-accessible; dedicated event parking details will be confirmed closer to race day — check the official website. Allow extra travel time from inner Sydney. Arrive by 5:30 AM for the expo and early wave registration.

Weather & What to Pack

April in western Sydney brings mild autumn conditions, typically ranging from 12°C to 22°C. Morning temperatures at race start can be cool — a light layer to warm up is recommended. The open runway offers little shade or wind shelter, so sunscreen and sunglasses are advisable for later waves. Humidity is generally low in autumn. Carry a small bottle of water for the start; aid stations will be on course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this event really held on an airport runway?

Yes — for one day only on 26 April 2026, the tarmac of the brand-new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport will be open exclusively for the Runway Run, six months before the airport opens to passenger flights in October 2026.

What charity does the event support?

The Runway Run raises funds for the Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation (SCHF). Participants are encouraged to fundraise on top of their entry fee. Contributions can fund art therapy workshops, bedside entertainment systems, emergency department care, and medical equipment for sick children.

Do I need to bring safety pins for my race bib?

Elite Energy is going pin-free in 2026. You can purchase BibSnaps (reusable bib fasteners) during registration or buy them at the event. If you prefer, you can bring your own safety pins — but the organisers encourage the eco-friendly BibSnaps option.

What are the minimum age requirements?

Age minimums vary by distance: Half Marathon (17+), 14km (15+), 7km (12+), 4km (6+). The Community Walk is open to all ages including children under 3, who register for free. All children must be accompanied and supervised by a registered adult.

Can families participate together?

Absolutely. The Community Walk has family pricing — a family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids) is $40, and a family of 5–7 (2 adults + 3–5 kids) is $50. All participants including children under 3 must be registered. The 4km Fun Run is also suitable for children aged 6 and over.
